Class Notes 2
Hi Folks!
I'm going to post every week or so about general yoga things going on in the studio, such as...
1. Fall Teacher Training has begun and like all teachers, I give lots of homewok! Some of you might find what we are doing interesting, so here's a sample:
This link is to an article by Georg Feuerstein. It serves as a nice launching off point for many yoga topics. He's a great writer; very smart, quite academic. As near as I can tell, everything he says can be trusted.
And for your listening pleasure, one of the chants we are studying...and chanting. A classic. This collection of chants was put together by Goerge Harrison and Ravi Shankar (father of Nora Jones) and is said to be very authentic.
One of the books we are reading is the Biography of Krishnamacharya, said by many to be the father of modern, western style yoga. It's an easy and fun read. We've got copies in the bookstore if you are interested.
2. Practice Quality. I've been hearing from other teachers, and noticing myself, that the quality of student's practice at the studio is improving. While I'd somehow like to take credit for this personally, I think it has more to do with the consistency of practice. People seem to be getting to a few classes a week and it pays off. It's satisfying as a teacher to see this.
3. Astanga Yoga. If you haven't been to one of Kelly Rose's classes, I highly recommend that you do. She's a very experienced Astanga yogi and teacher and it's getting harder and harder to find teachers in this tradition. The founder of this style, Pattahbi Jois, was a student of Krishnamacharya (mentioned above). In terms of lineage, Kelly Rose is about as close to the source as we'll get in Huron, Ohio. It's a very crisp physical practice with a strong emphasis on the core, alignment and the breath...along with about a million other great things. No matter what kind of yoga you like or practice, you will benefit from a few sessions of Astanga. Kelly teaches Monday mornings at 7:30 am and every other Wed at 6pm starting October 1st. She'll be taking the winter off, so get your sessions in now!
Till next time,
Brian
